Chapter Thirteen

Beep beep beep beep

“It’s only been three days. I don’t think we should automatically arrange for her to go to Columbia Crest just yet. She must have some family we can confer with.”

“Look, this is only your first day in the department. Patients have to be transferred to the appropriate level of care, and we can’t do anything more for her here.”

“But she’s one of our own. What if it was your sister? Would you say the same things?”

“Sawyer, I know you have good intentions, but we have to follow hospital policy on this.”

Sawyer’s name penetrated Codee’s foggy brain as she listened to the whispered argument. She thought she recognized the voice of the social services supervisor who in her opinion had always been a bit abrupt, especially for her role in the organization.

She wondered if someone had attached weights to her eyelids. They felt so heavy as she struggled to open her eyes, and then she felt it—that familiar touch to her hand.

“A few more hours, that’s all I ask. My shift just ended, so I can stay with her while you make the arrangements. I’d like to go with the transport vehicle in case she wakes up and is confused about where she is and where she’s going.”

“Okay, Sawyer, two hours. That’s all you’ve got.”

Sawyer, did she say Sawyer? But she’s dead. I saw them shoot her.

“Sawyer…,” Codee croaked as her eyes fluttered open.

“Oh Lord, that is the most welcome sight I’ve seen in days. You’re finally awake.” Sawyer’s hand squeezed Codee’s.

“Where am I?”

“You’re in the hospital’s advanced care unit. You’ve been out for three days now. Since you didn’t have any advance directives on file, or an emergency contact for us to call, we didn’t know how to proceed.”

“I have a sister, but she’s dead and you’re dead too.” Codee began to cry. “You’re a bloody hallucination that my guilty conscience is conjuring up right now. Where are all the peacekeepers, and what special hell did Trison decide to send me to?”

Sawyer crinkled her nose. “Trison? Are you talking about David Trison, the Patriot Party frontrunner?”

“Yes, President Trison,” Codee replied in exasperation.

“Oh, hon, bite your tongue. Boy, you really did bang your head good, not that I didn’t already know that after you wouldn’t wake up for the first forty-eight hours. God help us if that imbecile gets into office.”

She looked down at her hand linked with Sawyer’s and moved her thumb in an intimate caress. “You’re real.”

Sawyer chuckled. “Yes I am, or at least I think so. Reality can be elusive, can’t it?”

Codee tried to push herself up and felt an immediate pain travel along her arm. She glanced at the source of it, and her eyes traveled up and down the length of a cast starting from her elbow and nearly covering her wrist. Her fingers looked like large, fat sausages. “What did I break?”

“Some little bone in your arm, I think. I can’t recall the proper name for it. You probably shouldn’t try to push yourself up.
